Analysis of The Second Scene of 'The Sixth Sense'

Analysis of the second scene from The Sixth Sense
The second scene that I am going to analyse is the scene where Cole says "I see dead people." My interest to analyse this scene came because of the fitting music and the camera angles that are used to create suspense for the audience and make them wonder what both Cole and Malcolm are thinking and if he is going to tell his secret to the man. The link of the movie is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XcaNpHAQ3c&t=437s  you can find the scene at 48:04 - 51:44.

The first part of the scene that I analysed was the close-up shot where the Cole tells the Malcolm about 'his secret'. The close up is used to emphasise on the fact that the Cole is the main part of the scene and because of that what he is saying is very important. The quiet music in the background is used to create a tense atmosphere because the audience is anxious to find out what Cole's secret is. This is used effectively because lets the audience know Cole's secret and it also shows how Cole feels about his secret by his facial expressions and emotions. An example of this is when he starts to tell Malcolm his secret, his face starts trembling with fear and you can also see the tears rolling down his eyes. If the camera wasn't a close up it wouldn't be able to show this. This scene is used as kind of a climax point because the audience gets to find out everything about the boy and the things of the previous scenes which they couldn't explain has now been explained to them. You can watch this at 50:00-51:14.

The second camera angle I looked at was an over the shoulder shot of the Cole talking to Malcolm about his secret. This shot shows the big difference between Cole and the Malcolm mainly by the different in size, this shows that Cole is a lot more vulnerable than Malcolm because he was standing in a higher position than the Cole and he was basically looking over Cole. This was an effective technique because it shows the audience that the Cole is in a weak position and needs the help of Malcolm, it also shows links to Cole telling Malcolm is secret because it also adds to the fact that Cole is at a time of need, that is why he is trusting Malcolm who he believes can help him. The over the shoulder shot shows emotions and body language of Malcolm, this shows that he is anxious about what Cole is going to tell him. One of the ways this is effective is because it makes the audience feel like they're in the room with both Malcolm and Cole listening to their conversation. You can find this part of the scene at 50:18.

The final part of the scene that I thought effectively created suspense was done through the use of zoom. This part of the scene started with a mid shot of Malcolm and then as Malcolm deeply thinks about Coles secret, the shot switches to a close-up shot. When the camera zoomed into Malcolm's face, it was very effective because it clearly showed the change in Malcolm's emotions by the reactions in his face. The lighting in this scene is dim, this is to show that the topic of conversation is quite supernatural and not something that is often seen or heard about. Finally, the audience including me find this whole scene quite haunting because me personally when I heard Cole's secret, I found it abnormal and instantly thought of a demon inside him or some kind of possession. You can find this part of scene at 50:35.
